About the Event

Tell Mayor Breed and the Board of Supervisors to fund 2,000 new shelter beds in next year's budget.

RescueSF and our coalition partners across San Francisco call on the City to fund 2,000 new shelter beds in the upcoming 2023-2024 budget, and we are asking you to make your voice heard by emailing our mayor and supervisors and/or give public comment on SFGovTV for the hearing on March 21, 2023.

After more than forty years of witnessing the homelessness crisis on our streets, the City should take bold steps to end street sleeping.  With more than 4,000 unsheltered people living on our streets, adding 2,000 shelter beds would make an immediate impact on bringing people inside.  The example of 711 Post shows that the City can provide non-congregate shelter that is appealing to unsheltered people and also cost-effective for the City's budget.

At the same time, the City should also invest in cost-effective housing solutions for the people still on our streets and in our shelters.  Instead of spending vast sums on building or buying expensive housing that will serve relatively few people, the City should use proven methods to subsidize apartment rentals for people leaving homelessness.
