About the Event

Jennifer Friedenbach, the Executive Director of the Coalition on Homelessness, was a principal architect of Proposition C, the 2018 ballot measure to raise funds for addressing homelessness.  Cynthia Nagendra is the Executive Director of the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative.

In 2018, Proposition C passed with 61% of the vote, but the measure was held up in court for almost two years.  In September 2020, California’s Supreme Court ruled in San Francisco’s favor, freeing up almost $500 million for homelessness programs.  The measure is expected to generate $250 to $300 million per year.

Before the 2018 election, Jennifer Friedenbach wrote, “Proposition C is our chance to stand up for equity, for opportunity and for investing in the city’s future for this and succeeding generations. With 50 percent of our homeless population having become homeless before age 25, we must look long and hard at the cost of doing nothing.  Prop. C is our opportunity to turn around the humanitarian and public health emergency of homelessness with smart and humane solutions.”
